| How to choose a roofing system |
| There are many things to consider when selecting a new roof system. Cost and durability head the list, of course, but value, weight, fire-resistance, insulation, walkability, aesthetics and architectural style are all important too. The right system for your home is the one that balances all of these considerations. |
|
Our Products page is designed to introduce you to all of your roofing options, from types of material to styles and colors. We can help you select quality roofing from among some of the most trusted names in our industry. Of course, we are always happy to go over your choices in person, so please feel free to Contact Us about your roof.

Two examples of the most popular fiberglass composition shingles we install. Both come with a Lifetime warranty. See more photos in our Gallery.
|
This is probably the most popular of all roofing materials installed in the United States. Each shingle consists of a core material (fiberglass mat), a top and bottom layer of asphalt, with colored mineral granules for the surface coating.
Architectural laminated asphalt shingles consist of two or more layers that create a three dimensional look that mimics the look of wood shake.
|
| Asphalt composition overview |
| Fire Rating Asphalt shingles' fire resistance, like most other roofing materials, are categorized by Class A, B or C. Class A signifies the most fire-resistant; Classes B or C denote lesser fire resistance. |
| Warranties on asphalt shingles range from a 20 to 50years + and are transferable should you ever sell your home. Many manufacturers warranties provide full coverage for labor and materials in the first three to ten years after application. Our roofing consultants will gladly explain these in more detail when visiting you for an onsite roof estimate. |
| Walkability Composition shingles are installed directly on a solid wood deck over a roofing felt membrane. The shingles can easily be walked on without damaging them, even if the surface is wet from a recent rain storm. |
Weight Composition shingles are considered lightweight. An average home should be able to withhold up to 600lbs per sq. (1 sq=100sqft). Average weight examples along with wind warranty:
30yr Laminate shingle…....240lbs/sq................70 mph
40yr Laminate shingle…....260lbs/sq................80 mph
50yr Laminate shingle…....300lbs/sq................90 mph
50yr+ Laminate shingle....340lbs-480lbs/sq...110 mph
We can provide you copies of manufacturers warranties for specific details and limitations. |
| Insulation Asphalt shingle roofs provide little defense from the summer's heat. A study conducted by the University of Texas Arlington found that attic temperatures of a wood roofed structure were approximately 28 degrees cooler than asphalt buildings. To lower this heat build up we can install a radiant barrier ‘’heat shield’’ into the roof system. This reduces attic temperature 25-30 degrees. |

We install a number of different brand names of stone coated steel roof systems: Gerard, Decra, Metro and Stonehenge.
|
This product consists of a strong, 26 gauge metal armor that has been coated with zincualume corrosion inhibitors, epoxy primers and other protective layers to provide a permanent roof product that will not crack, break or curl. A thick coating or ceramically-fired earth-stone granules are then applied to give lasting beauty that tenaciously resist the harmful effects of sun, wind, rain, hail and snow.
These products are made to emulate the rich look of clay tile or wood shake. |

| Warranty 50 year to lifetime manufacturers transferable warranty. |
| Wind The best in the industry. 120 mph |
| Weight The lightest roofing material around. At only 1 1/2lbs per sq ft, stone coated metal roof systems are up to eight times lighter than clay or ‘’lightweight’ concrete tile. The interlocking feature of these products improves the structural rigidity of a home. This is an important consideration when living in an earthquake prone environment. |
| Fire Rating Can be installed with either Class A, B, or C rating. |
Insulation Good, Most of these roofs are installed over an elevated batten system. This for allows air flow underneath the roof panels. Metal does not retain heat, unlike asphalt shingles and cools down quickly when the sun goes down.
Installing a radiant barrier directly underneath the wood batten system, blocks 97% of radiant heat from entering the building and reduces attic temperature 25 – 30 degrees.

The two most common sizes of wood shakes are
- Medium grade, ½’’ average thickness
- Heavy grade, ¾’’ average thickness
Not all wood shakes are of the same quality. We offer the following grades:
- Regular grade. Rough appearance, wood has lots of knots, many shakes are only 6-8’’ wide. (Not recommended).
- ‘’Select’’ grade. Most popular choice among our customers. Appearance is not as rough or irregular as the regular grade. Shakes are generally of 85% edge grain. Shake are wider than regular grade making for a better quality roof installation.
- Premium grade. These are the best quality. More uniform in thickness and appearance. Wood is clear heartwood, 100% edge grain with a wide cut. Wood of this quality is less likely to cup and curl.

| Warranty 30-50 year limited warranty. |
| Weight 3-4 lbs per sq ft. |
| Fire Rating Class A, B or C. Fire treated shakes provide enduring fire protection with a state of the art treatment process. Cedar shakes are placed in pressure treatment cylinders where fire retardants are injected into the inner cells of the wood. The material then goes into a polymerization process and the fire retardants are locked into the wood. After 10 years of outdoor weathering and regular testing, the treatment has been deemed permanent. |
| Insulation Cedars unique cellar structure makes it an excellent insulator, keeping your house cooler in summer and warmer in winter. |

MonierLifetile, a local manufacturer of concrete tile, has many styles available.
|
Concrete tile is available in two different weights, "Standard weight" and "Light-weight." Standard weight is typically used on new construction and light-weight used for the re-roofing market, (homes originally constructed for lighter products like wood shake or asphalt composition.)
Standard weight concrete tiles weigh approximately 10 lbs per sq ft whereas light-weight is around 5.8 lbs per sq ft. Most single family homes are constructed to withhold approximately 6 lbs per sq ft. Our roofing consultants will be able to survey your roof structure and calculate to see in any structural reinforcement is needed before installing a new concrete tile on your home. We can also arrange to have a licensed structural engineer visit your home for a more thorough survey at a cost of $400.00. This fee will be reimbursed to you upon completion of your new MonierLifetile concrete roof.
